Selecting a Clinician

When selecting a clinician, you need to figure out if they will be able to provide the service(s) that you want. Please note that, for the time being, H.O.P.E. Psychotherapy only has psychotherapists and counselors available. The chart below lists the typical services of each mental health clinician:

During your first appointment with your selected clinician, don’t be afraid to ask them questions. Good questions to ask on an initial visit include (but are not limited to):

  • Are you in my insurance plan?

  • If you’re not in my plan, do you have a sliding scale?

  • How long will I need to see you?

  • What are your emergency procedures?

  • If I need a psychotherapist, can you give me resources?

  • How long do I need to wait for an appointment?

  • Will I see you each visit or your assistant?

  • What type of therapy do you practice?

  • If I don't think you’re a good fit, how can I find another clinician?

  • Who gets information about my treatment?

A Brief Word On Medication

Not everyone will want or need to take medication to help manage symptoms. However, if you and your clinician decide to try medication, become knowledgeable and responsible! Learn the name of your medication, the purpose of it, appropriate times to take it, and any potential side effects it may have. Make sure to follow the directions on the label (unless directed otherwise by your clinician). If you have problems or questions about your medication, contact your clinician and you will be correctly directed. Never stop your medication regimen abruptly - if you want to stop, discuss it with your clinician so you can create a plan to safely end your medication. Finally, even if you share similar symptoms and/or diagnoses with someone else, never give them your medication or take their medication.

Research suggests that symptoms/issues respond better with medication and psychotherapy in combination, rather than medication alone. So remember to keep seeing your clinician while taking your medication!
